Emerging Tech Institute

On its beautifully landscaped 30 acre campus located in the heart of Fort Myers, Fort Myers Institute of Technology provides students with industry-standard technology and equipment in all classrooms and labs. FMIT provides an education that enables students to become productive members of the workforce and community. Our instructors are licensed and certified teaching professionals.

Our employer-driven career education is sought after by students in need of job training or looking to enhance their skills for career advancement. Students train for secure, high-paying careers and nationally-recognized industry certifications. A typical full-time day for a workforce education adult student is six hours per day, thirty hours per week.

The educational delivery systems utilized at FMIT include traditional classroom settings, lecture, multimedia presentations, hands-on practice in labs, distance learning, clinical training, internships/co-op, and continuing education courses.

A unique strength of FMIT is the close working relationship the school has with area employers. This allows FMIT to deliver exactly what industry professionals are looking for in new employees. Over 150 business leaders serve on program advisory committees. These partnerships allow FMIT to meet the ever-changing need for workforce training in new and emerging industries.

FMIT was authorized in 1966 and operates under the governance of the State of Florida Department of Education (DOE) Division of Workforce Development, and The School District of Lee County. The institution opened in August 1967 as the "Lee County Area Vocational Technical School," and classes were held in various temporary locations until the present facility was occupied in 1968. A name change for the school was adopted in 1994 when the school became known as "Lee County High Tech Center Central."

FMIT opened an extension campus at the old Michigan Elementary School site and the Southwest Florida Public Service Academy relocated to that location in October 2011.

On February 21, 2012, the Lee County School Board officially changed the name of the school to Fort Myers Institute of Technology.

Currently, FMIT offers over 30 programs in a wide variety of occupational clusters. FMIT is proud of the thousands of students it has graduated throughout the years, many who have gone on to become the engine that drives the southwest Florida economy. Many graduates have become successful business owners, entrepreneurs, and skilled professionals in all walks of life.
